Choosing your date is the first real decision of a destination wedding, and in the Riviera Maya it shapes almost everything that follows: the experience on the day, how easily your guests can travel and what you will pay. After more than 16 years planning weddings here, this is how I help couples think about it.

The short answer

There is no single perfect month. There is the right month for your priorities. Decide what matters most to you (weather, budget, guest attendance, a specific holiday) and let that choose the season.

The drier months: roughly December to April

These are the months most couples ask for first. Days tend to be drier and evenings more comfortable, which is why demand is highest. If you want this window, plan and book early, especially for popular venues and Saturdays.

Hurricane season: June 1 to November 30

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June to November. It does not mean every week brings a storm, and many beautiful weddings happen in these months. It does mean you plan differently:

  • Ask every venue for a real rain plan, in writing.
  • Build flexibility into your timeline and vendor contracts.
  • Encourage guests to consider travel insurance.
  • Choose a planner who knows how local teams respond when the weather changes.

Heat and humidity

Summer days are hot and humid. That changes the hour of your ceremony, the fabrics you choose and the shade and water your guests will need. A sunset ceremony is often the most comfortable choice.

Sargassum

Seasonal sargassum seaweed can reach some beaches, and it varies a great deal from year to year and from beach to beach. Ask your venue how they handle it and what your alternative is if it arrives.

Holidays and peak travel

Christmas and New Year, Easter week and spring break bring higher flight and hotel prices and busier venues. If your guests are price-sensitive, avoid these dates, or book very early.

How to decide

  1. List your top three priorities as a couple.
  2. Shortlist two or three months that serve them.
  3. Check venue availability and guest travel for those months.
  4. Then choose your venue.

If you would like help weighing these choices, my planning timeline and venue visit checklist are free, and you can always ask me directly.

Questions

It depends on your priorities. The drier months, roughly December to April, are the most requested, while other months can offer better availability and value with good planning.
Is it safe to plan a wedding during hurricane season?
Many weddings take place between June and November. Plan with a written rain plan, flexible contracts and a planner who knows how local teams respond to weather changes.
How far in advance should we choose our date?
Twelve months or more is ideal for a destination wedding, so your guests have time to plan travel and you have the best choice of venues.
